Forum planned for Highland Park students, parents

Posted: Updated:
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (AP) -

The emergency manager for Highland Park Public Schools and representatives of a private company that will operate the district as a charter school system will meet with parents and students.

An informational forum is scheduled Wednesday at Highland Park High School.

The Leona Group LLC will provide educational services in Highland Park beginning this fall. Emergency manager Joyce Parker also will discuss the selection of the Leona Group.

Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Parker in May to fix the district's poor finances.

Highland Park Schools' budget deficit soared from $6.6 million to more than $11 million in the past fiscal year.

Officials say making the district a charter system was the only option that deals with the money troubles and allows Highland Park students to remain in schools inside the city.
