Tips for a mosquito-free summer

Posted: Updated:

As West Nile spreads throughout the U.S., protection from irritating mosquitos is becoming crucial.

Using landscape can be a cheap fix to the annoying summer pests. Plants like rosemary, catnip, marigolds and citronella grass will help to naturally repel mosquitos.

Keeping landscape well-trimmed boosts sun and wind exposure to help standing water evaporate and increase wind, which mosquitos don't like.

Another landscaping fix is to simply add fans to decks and porches. Mosquitos hate steady breezes, so adding active wind will keep you cool and keep mosquitos away.

Yellow bug lights also work great but some don't like the way they look. If you can't stand the look of them, LED lights work just as well. The frequencies of both yellow bug lights and LEDs don't attract mosquitos, unlike other lights.

Standing water attracts mosquitos, but, if you can't eliminate the water, you can add a product called BTI, which is fatal to mosquitos after they eat it. BTI even be added reflecting ponds or fish ponds.
