A Warren police officer is recovering at home after his bullet-proof vest saved his life during a shootout early Wednesday morning.

Two male roommates in Warren called police to report an armed man in their home demanding cash. According to police, the roommates hired a prostitute online and one of them refused to pay her. She called her 53-year-old pimp, and he came to the house to collect the money.
Police responded and that's when the pimp opened fire on the officers. 35-year-old Warren police Officer Donald Viars was shot but survived thanks to his bullet-proof vest.
The 53-year-old pimp was shot and killed during the shootout.
