Woman tries miraDry treatment for excessive sweating

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Guys sweat, women glisten, but what if the problem goes way beyond normal perspiration?  A metro Detroit woman is putting a new permanent solution to the test.

Alyssa Lewis, 26, has a serious perspiration problem.

"It's very embarrassing.  I don't want to lift up my arm.  I'm uncomfortable all the time.  During the winter, my clothes are getting wet from the sweat, so I'm cold because I'm damp."

"We call it hyperhydrosis, so it's excessive sweating," said Dr. Eric Seiger.  People normally sweat to cool their body off.  This is above and beyond that, so this is a medical condition."

After trying just about everything, Lewis went to the Skin and Vein Center in Sterling Heights for a new treatment called miraDry.

"This is electromagnetic energy, and what it does is it cools the skin," Seiger explained.  "Then it sends energy about three millimeters to five millimeters under the skin where your sweat ducts are, and it actually destroys your sweat ducts."

The skin is numbed, marked, and then suction is used to tackle those sweat glands.

"You can feel like it's actually trying to like suck up the skin, but once it gets up there, it's not painful at all," Lewis said.

"It's actually destroying the glands, so once you destroy the glands they're gone for good.  That's why this is the first permanent or first long lasting solution for hyperhydrosis," said Seiger.

One week later, we caught up with a very proud patient.  Lewis said the sweat has stopped completely.

"I feel so much more comfortable.  If someone wants to give me a hug, I don't feel uncomfortable like I don't want them to put their arms around me because I'm wet or damp."

She's amazed a problem that plagued her for years has been zapped away in a matter of minutes.

The cost for one treatment, which is usually all it takes, is $2,000.

There aren't many places that offer miraDry.  For more information on the Skin and Vein Center, visit www.skinandvein.com.
