Volunteers work to improve Detroit's Morningside neighborhood - Fox 2 News Headlines

150 service projects in just a matter of days.  A small army of volunteers have been coming together to make Detroit neighborhoods better.

There is some serious work being done in Detroit's Morningside neighborhood.  Volunteers have been working for about a week now.  A porch is getting a facelift and that's happening all over the neighborhood, and homeowners don't have to spend a dime.

"I cut the neighbors' grass and cut abandoned house grass and keep the street clean," said Alan Bell.

He is an all around good neighbor, but this week he's the one that's getting the helping hand.

The guys redoing Bell's brick walkway aren't contractors.  They're electrical engineers at GM, and they've spent this week volunteering with Handyman Ministries.

"We've already boarded up 21 of the houses and then did about 35 to 40 yard cleanups," we were told.

The project is one of many community service efforts happening all over Detroit leading up to Arise Detroit's Neighborhood Day, a day where thousands of people will come together all over the city proving that together there's no limit to what can be done.

"You hear so much about how Detroit is gone bad or it's falling apart, and so if we can do something to bring that back up, that brings the whole state of Michigan up, not only just Detroit," one person said.

"It really shows that other communities and other people care about what's happening in our community," Bell said.
