VAN BUREN TWP., Mich. (WJBK) -

Tragedy on a Van Buren Township Lake. Two young adults lost their lives in the water this weekend. The bodies of a man and a woman in their early 20's were pulled from Belleville Lake Sunday. The two victims went under Saturday night around 10pm. We're told they were likely walking or swimming near the sand bar, then they apparently got caught up in the current.

"At some points it's two, two and a half feet deep, so you can walk very comfortably," said Van Buren Twp. fire chief Dan Besson. "But it has sudden drop offs where it goes to 7-8 feet so more than likely the probably hit one of those drop offs. Plus at night it looks like the distance is a little closer than it is. So they probably thought they could make it to shore safely and unfortunately that didn't happen.

The bodies were found 200-300 yards from shore. The victims identities have not yet been released.
