Several shot outside Detroit Princess after late night cruise

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

"I heard the gunshots, and I ran to the edge of the boat," said Carol Hollier, who is also known as DJ Invisible.  "I [saw] chaos, massive chaos."

Shots were fired outside the Detroit Princess Riverboat early Monday morning.  DJ Invisible had just finished spinning on board the boat when he saw several women get hit on shore.

It had all started with a fight on board when a man hit his wife or girlfriend.  Security split them up.  911 was called at 1:01 a.m., but the rest of the family got involved once the Princess stopped.  At 1:13 a.m., EMS was notified of a shooting.

"One of the girls left the boat," said Detroit Princess General Manager Chris Clarke.

Witnesses say she had called her boyfriend to bring her a gun.

"Waited outside for the family to come off the boat and it was actually the cousin that shot their cousin," Clarke explained.

And not just one, several women were shot in the leg, another in the arm.

"The girls that got shot were very lucky.  They were standing on the elevated grass area away from the boat, and if they had been standing on the ground where the shooter was, they would've all had chest or head wounds," Hollier said.

In the meantime, the shooter, a woman in a blue dress, had driven off with a man in a light colored SUV, and someone else fired at them from the shore, hitting the man in the back.

"This lady [said], 'I had to pull out my pistol and shoot back,' and the crazy thing was they all knew each other.  It was like a family gone bad, Hatfields and McCoys," said Hollier.

That woman wasn't taken into custody and it's not clear why.  We're told the original shooter actually drove her boyfriend to the hospital, but police say she's not in custody, either.

In all, police say seven people were shot.  An employee of the princess was struck in the toe, but he is okay.

"He was hit in the toe just pulling innocent bystanders away.  I have to say she was a good shot.  She only shot her family," said Clarke.

Management with the Detroit Princess are relieved it didn't happen on the boat.  They say it could not have because of their security measures.

"We do ... hundred percent pat downs on our late night parties.  I feel very comfortable knowing that weapons can't get on this boat," Clarke said.

Management is trying to determine whether or not those late night cruises on Sundays are going to continue.  In the meantime, anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
