SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The FBI's Detroit Division has a new special agent in charge.  Robert D. Foley, III has been named to the position following the retirement of Andrew Arena earlier this year, the agency announced Monday.

Arena left the FBI to join the Detroit Crime Commission as the organization's executive director.

Foley comes to the Detroit from the Washington Field Office where he was special agent in charge of the Administrative Division.

Foley is a native of Massachusetts.  He has degrees from Rhode Island College, Boston University and the New England School of Law in Boston.  He was also an aviator for six years with the U.S. Army prior to joining the FBI.

Foley joined the agency in September 1996 and has held several posts during his nearly 16 year tenure, including many supervisory positions.  He has had experience with police corruption, gang, narcotics, public corruption and counterterrorism cases.
