SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
In the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, Clark Durant is taking on Pete Hoekstra. Randy Hekman and Gary Glenn are also in the running. All of them are vying for the chance to face off against incumbent and political powerhouse Senator Debbie Stabenow in the fall.
The 13th District could prove to be a challenge for the first time in many years for Congressman John Conyers. New demographics mean new challenges.
Voters are interested in what happens.
"They want change in their lives. They want change in government. They're seeing things that they're not too pleased with, so you have to get out and vote to make those changes happen," said voter Anita Hawkins.
Then there are the millage votes that you'll find on the ballot. In fact, across metro Detroit there are a lot of them.
In New Haven, voting no would cut the police department in half bringing them down to six officers including the chief.
"I don't want to see any of my guys lose their job. In many cases, once police officers are laid off, it's very difficult to find another job," said Chief Michael Henry.
Cities and townships across metro Detroit are dealing with the same scenario. To fund or not to fund, that's the question when it comes to public safety millages.
"I think it's important that the millage passes. I don't want services interrupted," Henry remarked.
Voters in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties will also be deciding on a millage for the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Gary Peters and Hansen Clarke are battling it out in the 14th District. Southfield MayorBrenda Lawrence and former state representative Mary Waters join former district court judge Bob Costello in that fight.

Detroit ditto heads rejoice. Your leader is interested in news in Detroit, at least enough to qualify a report on a large Powerball jackpot as more proof that 'low-information outreach' is working.
