Mich. boards meet on emergency manager vote, posts

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -

Michigan boards are expected to meet to put a possible repeal of the emergency manager law on the November ballot and re-appoint emergency managers in at least three cities.

The Board of State Canvassers meets Wednesday afternoon after getting orders from the Michigan Supreme Court to put the issue before voters. Once the referendum is placed on the ballot, the 2011 law will be suspended. An older law that grants fewer powers to managers will take its place.

If that happens, Treasury spokesman Caleb Buhs tells The Flint Journal the Local Emergency Financial Assistance Loan Board would meet shortly afterward to re-appoint managers in Benton Harbor, Ecorse and Pontiac. Flint is likely to get a new manager because of a technicality in the old law.
