SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Syed Taj has won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House seat formerly held by Republican Thaddeus McCotter.

But can the physician and trustee in Wayne County's Canton Township win Michigan's Republican-leaning 11th District? Pollsters say yes.

"Democrats have a chance to pick up another seat," says Eric Foster from Foster McCollum White Baydoun, a national public opinion polling and voter analytics consulting firm based in Michigan.

Taj defeated Bill Roberts of Wayne County's Redford Township, a Lyndon LaRouche supporter who called for President Barack Obama to be impeached.

Foster says Taj will be the underdog against Tea Party favorite Kerry Bentivolio, who defeated former state Sen. Nancy Cassis. But women and minorities could swing the 11th District vote, which includes portions of Oakland and Wayne counties near Detroit.

"The minority vote has increased significantly in Canton, Troy and a number of the other communities in the district," says Foster. "Come November, that's really going to help push Taj to at least be competitive, if not win."

McCotter was expected to win re-election easily but resigned after failing to produce enough petition signatures to qualify for the ballot.
