Gun discovered in holding cell at the Wayne County Jail

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Wayne County Jail is on St. Antoine in downtown Detroit.  Sheriff Benny Napoleon is investigating after a gun was discovered in a secure area of the jail.

Fox 2 has learned the gun was found in a secure holding cell.  Sources told us the gun was unloaded, empty, and appeared to be hidden.  It was not in plain view.

It's unknown when the weapon was placed in the cell, but it's entirely possible it's been there for some time.

The good news is that it was removed safely without incident.

As soon as the gun was discovered, the jail was placed on lock down.  No inmate was permitted to leave their cell.  No visitors, family or lawyers were allowed in or out of the jail.
