Detroit lighting future depends on Lansing votes

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -

Lawmakers in Lansing could move forward Detroit's plan to bring light to darkened streets with the approval of 3 measures before the state Senate.

The legislation could be voted on Wednesday when the Legislature reconvenes for one day.

One measure would allow communities across the state to establish lighting authorities. Another would allow part of a utility users tax to fund public lighting. The third would eliminate the rollback of Detroit income taxes.

All three are necessary for Mayor Dave Bing's plan to upgrade Detroit streetlights. Establishing a lighting authority is one facet of that plan.

Of the more than 80,000 streetlights in Detroit, only about 35,000 work. There also is a backlog of calls to repair or replace 3,300 burned-out bulbs.
