Detroit Block Club president honored by the city

Posted: Updated:

A Southwest Detroit neighborhood comes together to honor a hero.

Charlie Thomas has been the president of the Bassett Street Block Club for the past 43 years.   He was honored by the Detroit City Council on Saturday for his service to the city.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee was even on hand for the celebration,  he says Mr. Thomas should be an inspiration to people across the city.  "This is the foundation of a safe community...  neighbors who look out for each other, neighbors that know each other, multi generations that have watched families grow up, watched kids grow up.  This is what makes a safe neighborhood.  Detroit Police, we come in to reinforce community norms, and obviously the norms here are just tremendous.  So, if we could replicate the Bassett Street Block Club and move it all over the city, that would be the best situation for all of us." said Godbee.

Neighbors say Thomas is a kind, and generous man who they can count on for almost anything.
