Grosse Pointe Shores leaders nix county switch

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. (AP) -

Leaders in the upscale Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Shores have decided not to put the question before voters of switching the county in which most of them live.

The City Council on Tuesday night opted not to make any quick switches from Wayne to Macomb county. Most of the city sits in Wayne, which includes Detroit, and part is in Macomb.

Supporters say taxes would be lower if the city made the figurative move. Others have argued such a change requires more study, particularly its effect on the public school system and maintenance of a seawall on Lake St. Clair.

Some residents hope to get enough signatures during the next week to get it on the November ballot.

The city of about 3,000 people is home to lakefront mansions.
