LANSING, Mich. (AP) -
Gov. Rick Snyder's administration says Michigan appears to be moving toward a federal online health insurance exchange instead of one created and controlled by the state.
Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel said in an email late Wednesday to Mlive.com that Michigan is "on the path" toward a U.S.-controlled exchange. The exchanges are required under the federal health care law and are designed to help individuals and small businesses comparison shop for insurance policies.
Snyder has asked state lawmakers since last fall to approve the exchange so a federal partnership wouldn't be needed.
The Republican-controlled Senate approved the exchange last year. The GOP-led House has balked partly because members fear their votes could hurt them with voters this November.
Such an exchange is expected to help 500,000 residents buy insurance.
