Mich. marriage proposal turns into island rescue

CASEVILLE, Mich. (AP) -

A marriage proposal on the waters off Michigan left a couple stranded on an island until sheriff's deputies arrived by boat to rescue the pair.

Radio station WLEW reports 27-year-old Nathan Bluestein of Northville and 32-year-old May Gorial of Madison Heights set out by canoe Saturday in Wild Fowl Bay near Caseville, about 110 miles north of Detroit, and Gorial accepted the proposal.

The Huron County sheriff's department says winds carried them too far from shore and 3- to 5-foot waves prevented them from returning as planned.

They ended up on North Island and the sheriff's department sent two deputies by boat from Caseville to get them to safety Saturday night.

Wild Fowl Bay is located off Saginaw Bay, which is part of Lake Huron.
