Coconut oil helps prevent tooth decay

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

Coconut oil may be just what the dentist ordered. It's already know to condition skin, moisturize hair, and help you lose weight. Now an Irish study says coconut oil may help fight the bacteria responsible for tooth decay.

Researchers found when it's digested, coconut oil acts as an antibiotic. Further tests found coconut oil is also harmful to the yeast that causes oral thrush.

The applications for dental health are more important because according to government statistics more than 90% of Americans between the ages of 20-64 have some dental decay in their permanent teeth.

Experts say it would be pretty easy to add coconut oil to dental hygiene products because it's effective at relatively low concentrations. You may already be one step ahead if you use coconut oil when cooking.
