Michigan offering new Olympics license plate

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -

Michigan is offering a new license plate for motorists to show their support for the nation's Olympic athletes.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson on Wednesday announced the availability of the plate. The redesigned plate features bolder USA lettering and the phrase "Go Team USA" along the bottom.

It replaces Michigan's existing Olympic design that was introduced in 1995.

Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Jordyn Wieber says in a statement the plate "is a great way to say, 'Go Team USA!'" Wieber is from the Lansing-area community of DeWitt.

The license plate costs $35. Of that price, $25 benefits athletes training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

When the plates are renewed, the additional $10 goes entirely to the education center.
