DETROIT (AP) -

Classes in the first week of the Detroit Public Schools' new semester are showing better attendance.

District emergency financial manager Roy Roberts says Thursday that attendance on the second day of school Wednesday reached nearly 85 percent.

In recent years, the required 75 percent minimum attendance that allows the district to receive full state aid was not reached until the second or third weeks of classes.

More than 42,500 students out of a projected 50,420 made it to class on Wednesday. Attendance increased by nearly 7,400 students from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Fewer than 25 students at 15 schools were absent Wednesday.

The district's budget is based on a fall enrollment of 49,852 students. Roberts is urging parents to make sure their children get to school.
