Preventing West Nile: Eliminate standing water in subtle spots

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

Several people in Michigan have died from West Nile virus and more than 100 are known to be infected.  As this is being called one of the worst West Nile seasons in history, we want to get really specific on how to protect yourself.

You've heard the advice about eliminating standing water in places like bird baths and kiddie pools, but there may be other less obvious places where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.  They only need about a half inch of water to hatch.

For example, water can collect in the posts of chain link fences.  The easiest fix is to cap them.

Play sets are another place where water can accumulate.  You can drill holes in playground equipment where water collects.

Finally, make sure you don't have any spare tires lying around your property.  They are the most common mosquito breeding ground in the country.  If you use tires in retaining walls, landscaping or play structures, drill a few holes for drainage.
