DETROIT (AP) -

Detroit's police chief says "senseless acts of violence" between acquaintances are behind a recent spike in homicides in the city.

As of Friday, the police department says the city's 2012 unofficial criminal homicide total was 261. Police say that includes at least 13 over an eight-day period.

Chief Ralph Godbee said in a statement Sunday night that the increase is "primarily due to senseless acts of violence between known acquaintances."
