CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: Chicago police shot two men in separate shootings on the city's south and west sides overnight.

One of those shootings occurred near 79th Street and South Shore Drive just after midnight.

Officers were investigating an earlier call of "shots fired" when they saw two men standing on the sidewalk, one with a handgun in his waistband, according to a police statement.

The men walked toward the police and the one with the handgun pointed it at one of the officers, prompting them to open fire. The police then arrested him, according to the statement.

The man, 26, was taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with gunshot wounds to the left arm and left buttock, police said, adding that he had two weapons convictions in the last four years.

The second man was also arrested, according to the statement.

Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Larry Merritt said a weapon was recovered.

IPRA and Area South detectives continue to investigate.

About three hours earlier, officers shot and wounded a robbery suspect near the intersection of Lotus and Bloomingdale avenues in the North Austin neighborhood.

Both men are in the hospital Monday morning.
