The 2012 Warrior Ride left from the Fallen Heroes Memorial Site adjacent to the Oakland County Sheriff Department in Pontiac to raise scholarship money for three children of fallen Michigan soldiers.
Those benefiting from the event include Kairo Stevens, the son of LCPL Steven Stevens from Detroit who was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2011.
The Warrior Ride will also help Skyler and Angel, the children of Corporal Joseph and Sarah VanDreumel of Grand Rapids. Corporal Joseph A. VanDreumel served with 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade in Grafenwoehr, Germany, and was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2011.
The ride is sponsored by the Willis Foundation which will be donating to the scholarship fund and will be helping with the completion of the Fallen Heroes Memorial.
The group of 25 bicyclists, made up of Marines and civilians are expected to make it to Charlotte, Michigan the first day en route to their final destination, the Custer National Cemetery and Battle Creek Military Base on Saturday.
