The new greenhouse at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital uses hydroponics, growing plants in water, instead of soil, to maximize diversity, and maintain space for patients, staff and visitors.
In addition to feeding patients, the produce is used in the hospital's 90-seat Demonstration Kitchen, where healthy cooking classes are offered to the community, and Henry's café. They are also sold at Henry Ford West Bloomfield's seasonal weekly farmers' market, which is open to the public.
The greenhouse will also be used for school field trips, so that children can learn better nutrition, as well as for therapy for patients.
The greenhouse was built exclusively with funding from an anonymous donor.
Greenhouse hours are 9 am - 4 pm daily (volunteer-led tour is free). Evenings, workshops or tours by Michelle are by appointment. There is a nominal fee for organized groups for farmer or chef programs.
