Detroit City Council moves Belle Isle hearing to next week

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (MyFox Detroit) -

Plans to discuss the future of Belle Isle will have to wait until next week. That's because Detroit City Council canceled a scheduled hearing Monday.

Council had planned to discuss a controversial 30-year lease that would see the state run the 985-acre park this afternoon. Sources say the meeting will be re-scheduled for sometime next week.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder last week agreed to terms that Bing says would save the cash-strapped city $275 million over the life of the lease.

The lease would require council's approval. At least three council members are opposed to the deal.

A 1 p.m. meeting is scheduled Monday to give residents the chance to voice their opinions.

Proposals for a Michigan takeover of the island park have met fierce opposition from some local officials who resist state control. In this agreement, Detroit maintains ownership of the park and the state would manage it.
