SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson was issued a ticket Tuesday for not wearing a seat belt in August when he was injured in a bad accident.

Police said the violation is a civil infraction that carries a maximum $65 fine, but adds no points to one's driving record.

Patterson said in a statement that he had already paid the fine.

"Not wearing a seat belt was a mistake," the county executive said.  "I accept my responsibility and paid the $65 fine this afternoon."

The accident involving a Chrysler 300 and a Volkswagen Passat happened August 10 at the intersection of Walton and Opdyke in Auburn Hills.  Patterson was a passenger in the Chrysler.  Police said Anthony Prainito, who was driving the Volkswagen, failed to yield while turning left.

Prainito is charged with three counts of Moving Violation Causing Serious Impairment of a Bodily Function.

Police said Patterson's driver, James Cram, was also not wearing a seat belt, but has not been issued a ticket.

Patterson spent several weeks in the hospital following the crash.
