Four grueling weeks in the books with five big regular season games left. By this part of the season people can get a good sense of how good their team really is, and in some cases teams will already be looking forward to next season.
This week's slate of games may be the best to this point of the season. Two major ones really pop out at me this week.
The first game that really jumped out and grabbed me is a contest between two of the top five teams in the state, Detroit Cass Tech and Orchard Lake St. Mary's.
Cass Tech, the top team in the state, has played extremely well to this point of the season. Sporting a perfect 4-0 record, the Technicians, have beaten the likes of Brother Rice and Renaissance, some top competition . Last week Cass shook off an opening kickoff return for a touchdown by Detroit Cody and won handily 46-20. Running back Gary Hosey was the main attraction in that one as he got loose for 178 yards and two scores. The junior has given the Technicians a very good complement to star quarterback Jayru Campbell. Campbell has been off the charts this season slinging the ball all over the field accounting for 12 touchdown passes through the air. Cass will have to continue the offensive balance against a tough catholic league opponent.
Orchard Lake St. Mary's comes into this one as the best team in division three and a force to be reckoned with. The 3-1 football team comes off a 43-7 shellacking of Detroit Jesuit. The Eaglets have won three in a row and will look to make it four against Cass Tech. A lot of the talk has about the red turf that St. Mary's installed in the off season. We will have to see if that has any effect on the outcome of this one. I just don't see it happening though as Cass Tech is just too talented for this Eaglets squad.
Lieutenant Dan's Prediction: Detroit Cass Tech 24, Orchard Lake St. Mary's 3
The other tilt that has my attention this week is the battle out in the Macomb Athletic Conference as Utica Eisenhower travels to Macomb Dakota.
Utica Eisenhower wants to continue what they did last week, as they were able to down Gross Pointe South 39-7. Ike had great field position all night beginning four drives inside Gross Pointe territory which led to some easy points. The defense was super aggressive in that one coming up with six sacks and a forced fumble, which led to a touchdown. Quarterback Joe Zerafa shook off the disappointing game against Chippewa Valley by accounting for three touchdowns in the win over South. Zerafa has to continue that solid play against the always tough Dakota defense.
Macomb Dakota looks to defend their home turf and in doing so will want to extend their hot play, winners of three straight games. Last week Dakota piled it on Port Huron Northern 49-20. Dakota will sport a forceful offense that had their second string out on the field in the 3rd quarter. They seem talented and balanced with 3 touchdowns through the air and two on the ground which makes them a difficult attack to key on. They'll need it against a tough Eisenhower defense
Lieutenant Dan's prediction: Macomb Dakota 16, Utica Eisenhower 13
Other games to watch: Dearborn @ Dearborn Fordson, Livonia Churchill @ Canton, Redford Thurston @ Garden City
