DETROIT (WJBK) -
Around 7:00 a.m. Monday, two employees were refilling an ATM at Strong Steel Products on Detroit's east side. Two masked gunmen suddenly appeared, disarming the drivers and stealing the armored van. Two million dollars was allegedly inside.
Monday afternoon, the FBI had not ruled out the possibility that this could be an inside job.
"I can't comment as to that right now. We're just in the process of conducting this investigation to determine exactly what took place here," said FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet.
The van was ditched around the corner at Harper and Sherwood. FBI agents surrounded the abandoned vehicle, but the thieves got away. Evidence technicians dusted for prints looking for their one big break in the case.
FBI agents were removing boxes found in the van that we were told contained evidence of some sort. They were taking those boxes into a tent and dusting them for fingerprints. We were told if they got a hit, the SWAT team was standing by.
Police indicated they are following strong leads, but wouldn't say if they were close to making any arrests.
So how much money is missing? We may never know. It's been reported the thieves left empty handed because they couldn't open the safe, but a source on the scene told us the men may have made off like bandits stealing more than a million dollars in loose bills stuffed in money bags in the back on the truck. Police wouldn't confirm which story is true.
A license plate on the van traced back to Total Armored Car Services based in Detroit. The owner of that company wasn't talking either.
"Everyone's doing well," he said. "I have no comment for anyone."
