Former Detroit Mayor Kawme KIlpatrick outside a Federal Courthouse in Detroit.
DETROIT (WJBK) -
A former mayoral bodyguard testified
that former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick told him to take $1500 from
one of hizzoner's shoes to pay off a credit card bill.
The officer said he found $1800 in a pair of shoes Kilpatrick kept in a closet.
Now that may stink to high heaven, but Fox2 legal analyst Charlie Langton says it's not a problem for the former mayor.
Another police bodyguard testified that he flew on contractor Tony Soave's private plane with Kilpatrick and others.
One trip was to Bermuda.
The other was a day of shopping in Manhattan with Soave, the Mayor and Christine Beatty.
An IRS investigator also told jurors Kilpatrick began making large cash deposits right after he became mayor.
While
cash and trips dominated the first day of testimony in the trial of
kilpatrick, his father Bernard Kilpatrick, his best friend Booby
Ferguson and the city's former water director Victor Mercado, Langton
says prosecutors have yet to draw blood.
Defense attorney James Thomas pointed out that there is nothing illegal about accepting a cash gift.
That's
good news for Kilpatrick, since we heard testimony about a Greektown
birthday celebration where an empty box was passed and guests were
encouraged to fill it with cash for the mayor.
Outside the courthouse, Thomas declined to discuss the case.
What's on tap for day 2 (Tuesday): More testimony about cash in places like a vacuum cleaner and lavish gifts from contractors.
