Detroit City Council to discuss future of Belle Isle Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

The Detroit City Council plans to discuss the future of Belle Isle during a scheduled hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Last week, council members lashed out over a controversial 30-year lease that would see the state run the 985-acre park this afternoon. Some say the deal lacks guarantees the state would spend the money necessary to restore the park.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder agreed to terms earlier this month that Bing says would save the cash-strapped city $275 million over the life of the lease.

The lease would require council's approval. At least three council members are opposed to the deal.

Proposals for a Michigan takeover of the island park have met fierce opposition from some local officials who resist state control. In this agreement, Detroit maintains ownership of the park and the state would manage it.
