SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Miss Michigan 2012 Angela Venditti has teamed up with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office to promote October as Women's Self-Defense Awareness Month in Oakland County.

As part of this initiative, the organizations will present free women's self-defense courses to females in metro-Detroit each Saturday during the month of October.

The free classes will be held at The Rochester Hills O.P.C. (650 Leticia Drive) from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays throughout October. Each individual session will be led by Sergeant Jen Miles from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, who will instruct participants on the prevention and implementation of basic self-defense techniques.

Those females wishing to attend the free class should wear comfortable athletic clothing and closed-toe tennis shoes. Sandals are not permitted. Women ages 18 and older are eligible to participate, along with those ages 14-17 who present written, parental permission.

To register for the program, interested individuals should choose either October 6, 13, 20 or 27 for their desired class date and contact the Oakland County Sheriff's Office at (248) 975-9700 ext. 5.
