Union: Hamtramck to lay off 12 of its 27 firefighters

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Union officials say the city of Hamtramck is scheduled to lay off 12 of its 27 firefighters on Monday.

In a release, the union says the firefighters that will remain on the job are committed to maintaining quality fire services, but they're concerned about their own health and safety.

"(The layoffs) will cause health and safety issues for not only the remaining firefighters but also possibly the residents of Hamtramck," said Lt. William Diamond

The layoffs were supposed to take place last month, but city officials delayed the cuts thinking they were to receive over $1 million from a federal grant. City leaders are still waiting to hear about the money.

Officials in the Detroit enclave were not immediately available for comment.
