Jaymie Bresso was in chorus class at North Farmington High School last week when she heard the announcement over the P.A. system. The 18-year-old with Down syndrome is one of three senior girls nominated to the homecoming court.
"She was all excited, jumped into the car and said, 'I'm on the court.' So she was totally thrilled," said Terri Bresso, Jaymie's mom.
They have been shopping for dresses and getting ready for the big night.
"It's neat that the class accepts her and she's one of the class," her mom remarked. "Everybody knows Jaymie. All the teachers love her. She's just a great kid."
Jaymie's older brother and sister and her twin sister all graduated from North Farmington. Her mom got emotional when she talked about how Jaymie has been treated there.
"No matter if they're special needs or not, they're just like everybody else, and she's just been treated just like everybody else."
Students and staff say Jaymie's nomination to the homecoming court is just indicative of the culture at the school, one that celebrates everybody.
"She is the sweetest girl ever. She makes sure to say hi to every single person she knows," said friend Lauren Yellen.
She nominated Jaymie. There were dozens of other people on the ballot, but their fellow students voted Jaymie onto the court.
"When I found out, I started crying," Yellen said.
Dad, Rick, is Jaymie's escort for the homecoming game and the big announcement.
"I have to walk across the field with Jaymie," he said. "To stand there and wait for the announcement of who the queen is, that will be exciting."
A proud father, a proud family no matter who is crowned queen.
"I feel great because I won homecoming court," said Jaymie Bresso.
"If her name is called, that is wonderful, and if it's not, it's still wonderful because she's a winner no matter what," her mother said.
FOX 2 was on hand at the North Farmington homecoming game Friday night as the big announcement was made. While Jaymie wasn't voted homecoming queen, we congratulate her on being elected to the court.
