DETROIT -- Kwame Kilpatrick says he never took a cent from a charity fund meant for kids and voter education, but testimony Friday said otherwise.
The Kilpatrick Civic Fund was supposed to help improve Detroit's image and its neighborhoods, but federal prosecutors said all it did was further Kilpatrick's political career.
Kwame Kilpatrick once swore during a debate that not one penny of his nonprofit Kilpatrick Civic Find would be used for political purposes. "I wouldn't mess with the IRS," he said.
On Friday, pollster David Gotoff testified that his political research firm received tens of thousands of dollars from the fund from work it did on Kilpatrick's 2001 mayoral campaign.
Defense attorney Jim Thomas tried convincing Gotoff that some of his research was used to help Detroiters. The political operative didn't seem to buy it.
Prosecutors contend that Kilpatrick committed fraud by using money that was donated by people who wanted to help the city. Fundraising requests explicitly said the money would not be used to help elect a candidate, but in this case it did and the candidate was Kilpatrick himself.
