Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee retires amid scandal

DETROIT -- Detroit's top cop has announced his retirement.  Ralph Godbee is leaving his post in the midst of a sex scandal involving a subordinate.

"Today after a 25 year career with the Detroit Police Department, Chief Godbee has submitted a letter announcing his retirement effective immediately," Mayor Dave Bing said Monday morning.

"He did tell me that he had a relationship with Ms. Robinson, yes," Bing also said.

Godbee is gone after female subordinates told FOX 2 News that they had sex with the chief and then got promoted.

And now this bombshell.  Mayor Bing said he was aware of a deal with Lieutenant Monique Patterson when he hired Godbee two years ago.

"So you knew about it, you ignored it, will you be resigning?" I asked Bing at the press conference.

"No, I will not be resigning.  I was aware that there was a relationship between the chief and Lieutenant Patterson.  But under the circumstances, I felt that he was the most qualified person at that time," he answered.

But wait, there's much more to this story.  One, FOX 2 has learned that at least four high ranking police officials were engaged with tracking down Officer Angelica Robinson last Saturday night after she became distraught, put a pistol in her mouth and posted it on Twitter after she found out Godbee was traveling with another woman.  Two, it doesn't appear likely that the police got a judge's permission to tap Officer Robinson's phone.

"Sir, I don't want to tell you who's going to be doing the investigation, but an investigation will be conducted.  In fact, it's already underway," said Interim Chief Chester Logan.

Bing said he talked with Godbee about his intradepartmental philandering.

"We have had that conversation on more than one occasion because I had concerns just based on the history.  And he confided in me that he had changed his way, and I had no reason not to believe that."

Bing said a national search for a police chief is underway.  The person chosen will be the fourth chief of police in Bing's tumultuous three and a half years as mayor.
