FARIBAULT, Minn. (KMSP) -

A former teacher at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Faribault is facing 17 criminal charges related to allegations of sexual misconduct involving at least six former students between 1999 and 2003.

Lynn Phillip Seibel, 70, is charged with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of solicitation of a child to engage in sexual conduct, one count of using a minor in sexual performance and 12 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct related to incidents involving students at the school.

Seibel, who left Minnesota for Hollywood almost a decade ago is now an actor appearing on shows like "The Big Bang Theory." Now, he is in the Los Angeles County Jail on charges unrelated to this investigation.

Officials say he admitted to many of the allegations regarding the Shattuck-St. Mary's students, saying, "There were times when I did inappropriately touch, and it was stupid. It was stupid on my part."

He went on to recall a conversation he had with the school's head master in 2003 while he was being let go after child pornography was found on his school-issued computer. Seibel explained that interim headmaster Dennis Brown confronted him and said, "Lynn, you're a sick man. You need to do something about it. Get help."

The school did not report that incident to police, but officials at the school say they did report allegations of sexual misconduct against Seibel two years earlier to both Faribault Police and the Department of Social Services.

Seibel allegedly held "AP drama sessions" in dorm rooms and classrooms during which students between the ages of 15 and 18 years old would watch pornography and masturbate while Seibel walked around the room measuring their genitals with a ruler and telling them how they could increase their size.

"This is how people in Hollywood do it," Seibel said at one session detailed by an alleged victim.

No information about the victims has been released.

Seibel also faces one count of possession of child pornography. The charges are the result of an investigation opened in June 2012 by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Faribault police.

Faribault police opened their investigation in June after an individual reported to an Olmsted Community Corrections employee that he had been assaulted by Seibel while a student at Shattuck-St. Mary's in 2001.

Investigators from the BCA and Faribault Police Department eventually identified and interviewed four former students who provided similar details about incidents which took place from 2001 until Seibel's departure from the school in 2003, when child pornography was found on his computer.

Seibel was a "dorm parent" during his term of employment, meaning he lived on campus in the dorms to supervise the students. The charges allege he would often walk in and watch students as they showered.

The case is being prosecuted by the Rice County Attorney's Office. The BCA and Faribault police were assisted with the investigation by federal law enforcement and police in Chicago, Los Angeles, Michigan, Montana and Texas.

On Monday afternoon, Shattuck-St. Mary's director of communications, Amy Wolf, released the following statement on behalf of the school:

Today, Shattuck-St. Mary's has learned that Lynn Seibel, a former employee, has been charged with a number of very serious matters dating from 1996 to 2003. The school has actively and fully cooperated with authorities since first learning of this investigation in August.

In May 2001, an individual made allegations of sexual misconduct regarding Mr. Seibel that were promptly investigated by the school. While the investigation did not corroborate those allegations, the School nonetheless disclosed them in several instances between June and October 2001 to the Rice County Department of Social Services and to the Faribault Police Department. To our knowledge, neither organization acted on those disclosures. We have provided investigators with the contemporaneous records of those disclosures.

Mr. Seibel was separated from the school in 2003 after SSM discovered pornographic material unrelated to our community on his school-issued computer. This material was a violation of our code of conduct and grounds for termination, but, after consultation with the school's attorneys, the school confirmed that the material did not trigger a reporting requirement.

Until today, we were unaware of any other allegations of misconduct by Mr. Seibel during his employment with the school.

The safety and well-being of our students has been, and will always be, Shattuck-St. Mary's highest priority. Through policies, training and adherence to NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) best practices, the Shattuck-St. Mary's school community has consistently demonstrated a commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for its students. The alleged conduct does not reflect the values of our school and, if true, is a severe breach of the environment of trust and security that Shattuck-St. Mary's has worked hard to create over its many years.

As a school community committed to the growth and development of young people and as educators, parents, and human beings, these allegations are disturbing, repugnant, and profoundly sad. It is important to us that the truth is uncovered and that justice is served.

Shattuck-St. Mary's is a private boarding school in Faribault with about 450 students. The school is a hockey breeding ground, with current NHL stars Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise and Jonathan Toews among its alumni.

The school has a rich history, and refers to itself as a "center of excellence" with an emphasis on hockey, soccer, figure skating and the arts. It first opened in 1858 and was converted into a military academy in the mid-1860s. It kept the military program until 1974.

The school could face charges in the case if officials determine they broke the mandatory reporting law.

Lynn Seibel has acting credits for roles on "The Big Bang Theory," "Dallas," "Little House on the Prairie," "Murder She Wrote" and many other TV shows and movies, including "Mighty Ducks 3."
