CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: A 55-year-old man was fatally shot early Wednesday while parking his car in his garage in the South Side Bridgeport neighborhood.

Bai Wei Wang was parking his car in his garage was pulling into his garage near 30th Street and Haynes Court around 12:40 Wednesday morning when bullets flew through his car windows.

When neighbors heard gunfire, they went over to the car and found the victim unresponsive in the driver's seat. They saw a dark-colored van heading out of the alley at a high rate of speed, according to Chicago police.

Paramedics took Wang to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said he did not survive his injuries.

It was unclear whether the man was shot during an attempted robbery, and Area Central detectives continue to search for a motive.

Friends and family stopped by the house to console the victim's widow, who they said Wang called just before he was shot.

"His wife got a phone call from him but didn't know where was," Henry Tan said. "They kept calling him back [but couldn't reach him.] Police picked up later and said, ‘We're behind house.'"

Neighbors said violence in the Bridgeport neighborhood has gotten worse.

Police are searching for a dark colored van last seen speeding away from the scene.

Wang emigrated from China to Chicago about 20 years ago. He was in the construction business, and by all accounts, he worked hard and was well liked.
