SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- From decorative contact lenses to face paint, experts warn that Halloween costumes may result in a wide array of potentially serious health issues from falls to allergic reactions.

Renee Zarr, injury prevention expert at Children's Hospital of Michigan, has the following guidelines on how kids and their parents can enjoy a fun and safe Halloween:

Trick-or-Treating door to door
· Obey all traffic signals and watch out for cars
· Carry something that glows in the dark or a flashlight
· Stick close to home
· Only go to homes with the porch light on
· Trick-or-treat with family members and friends; an adult should also remain nearby
· Never go inside a stranger's home
· Carry a cell phone for emergencies

Choosing a Costume
· Non-toxic face paint is preferred over masks
· If your child insists on a mask, pick on with large eye holes for ample vision
· Costume should not be too long
· Wear shoes that fit
· Avoid swords, canes, and other props that can trip or harm others
· Apply reflective tape to costumes

Check out treats before you eat
· Parents should inspect items before kids start eating the treats
· Discard anything that's loose or not in a wrapper; this include fresh fruit
· Make sure kids don't overdo it; negotiate how the candy will be rationed over time

Too much candy?
· Participate in a candy exchange
· Share heat-resistance candy with soldiers in care packages with organizations like Operation Gratitude and Operation Shoebox
· Recycle in goodie bags for an upcoming birthday or other party
