DETROIT -- "The only way that we're going to get this done is by working together," Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said at a news conference Monday.
He is feeling confident after extending an olive branch to Detroit City Council. It's the first time he's appeared before council since June.
The mayor asked council to prioritize six items at the top of his agenda. He also held his tongue when council offered polite criticism of his lack of partnership with them.
"Partnerships are good," Council Member James Tate told the mayor. "We've seen it all around the country in every facet of life. When you have individuals who are willing to work together, things move faster and more efficiently. So this is good to hear this and see this."
"Part of what takes time are answers to our questions that don't get back to us in a timely fashion," City Council President Charles Pugh said. "We have never been the reason why process take too long."
Both Mayor Bing and city council agreed one of the most pressing issues is creating a public lighting authority.
The mayor says to keep things running smoothly, Detroit needs $10 million in November and another $20 million in December, but now everyone's on the same page.
"That was one of the more positive meetings that I've been involved in as it relates with city council, and I'm looking forward to improving that relationship," Bing said.
