Governor Brown On Good Day LA Leading Charge For Proposition 30 - Fox 2 News Headlines

Governor Brown Stops By Fox 11 To Sell Prop 30

Posted: Updated:

Governor Jerry Brown visited the studios of Good Day LA to gain support for Proposition 30. This proposition would raise state income tax for those who make more than $250,000, and will also raise California's sales tax to 7.5% from 7.25%. Brown says we have 30,000 fewer teachers, tuition has gone up, thousands of classes are being canceled, and class sizes are rising which is why the state needs the money.

Brown says most of the filings come from couples. For example, to pay a penny, you have to make $500,000, and then you pay 1%, then 2% then 3% for seven years.

On the sales tax part, it's 1/4 of a penny. For example you would pay a penny for a $4.00 sandwich.  He says we can afford it because kids getting into good schools means good jobs, which means California can compete.

Opponents say this proposition is a 'governor's shell game' because while it says it will raise money for education, it could be used for something else and not necessarily for education.  Brown insists it will be spent on schools, and if the proposition fails, then $6 billion doesn't come into the system, 3 weeks of school in Los Angeles and thousands of classes in community colleges. Also, tuition will go up $2,400 in January. Brown says he made a lot of cuts but still needs the taxes to fulfill the $6 billion needed to make this work.
