Gina is not up-to-date on her rabies vaccine and legally can't be released to her owner until she gets her shot. Here's the problem. There is no veterinarian at Detroit Animal Control and there hasn't been one there since the city let the contract expire on October 1.

DETROIT -- Leash in hand, Ruth Fontanez was going to get her dog Tuesday. Gina got out of her yard last Wednesday. On Friday, Fontanez found her at Detroit Animal Control, but as we told you previously, she couldn't take her dog home because there was no veterinarian on staff to give Gina a rabies vaccine.
The city had let the vet's contract expire on October 1. While Animal Control transitions to another city department, it has been in limbo and so have the animals inside -- no vaccinations, no medical treatment, no euthanizations all month.
After our story aired Monday night, a spirited discussion ensured at city council Tuesday morning with the mayor's office and council determined to get the contract signed and the vet back to work.
"A bad situation of somebody not planning properly. It fell through the cracks, but now city council's here to the rescue," said City Council President Charles Pugh.
Technically the paperwork won't be signed until Wednesday morning at city council, but the veterinarian is already back at Detroit Animal Control.
Meanwhile, Gina went home up to date on her shots. The dogs inside are now getting the proper care, as well.
"The vet went in there and personally gave every animal that needed shots today, it's all done, and all the animals are being treated right now," said Jessica Ramirez.
"Every tear that I cried for my baby, that even that she got lost, I guess it was worth it because now... the other animals are being taken care of," Fontanez remarked. "I'm very, very happy and very grateful. Thank you very much FOX 2."
