Tristate area residents are being urged to help the elderly prepare for next week's predicted "super storm."

In New York City, Citymeals-on-Wheels suggests adding a little extra to your shopping cart in case older neighbors need help.

The suggestions include water, flashlights, batteries and extra food.

Citymeals-on-Wheels is protecting its homebound clients in Brooklyn and Queens by providing thousands of emergency packages filled with shelf-stable meals.

With flooding likely in coastal areas like the Jersey Shore, Long Island and Connecticut, the elderly may be forced to remain indoors for an extended period of time.

Strong winds could bring down trees and power lines leading to outages.

Elderly people and those that care for them should ensure proper clothing for dropping temperatures.

Family and friends should check on the elderly and be prepared to help facilitate moving to safer grounds in the event of an evacuation.

Like everyone in the path of a major storm, a go-kit along with non-perishable foods, water, medications and a battery operated radio are crucial.
