ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -- DTE Energy says around 35,000 homes and businesses are without power as Sandy's strength stretched all the way into Southeast Michigan. Crews are working around the clock to get things back to normal.
Tuesday afternoon, we found a tree down on top of a car in Saint Clair Shores. Another hung from a power line in Farmington Hills where still another was blown down and sheered off at the base.
"We didn't think it went down at first until we had to go out and check on it. We were actually really shocked that it was that tree of all of them around here that went down because that was a pretty big tree," a man told us.
Even emergency responders in Harper Woods were not immune. At 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, a generator was powering emergency dispatch, but the rest of the building was in the dark.
"We're just patiently waiting for them to arrive to get us back up and running," said Harper Woods Fire Chief Sean Gunnery.
Power to Harper Woods City Hall was knocked out around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, closing the building for the day. 911 dispatch was even rerouted to Grosse Pointe Woods for about seven hours.
As of 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, we confirmed that Harper Woods City Hall was still without power.
At the airport, flights to and from New York and New Jersey were canceled. The best advice is to go online and check your flight if you're traveling anywhere in the storm's path.
"Those airports are absolutely closed. In fact, I just saw a picture from Jet Blue and there's still water on the ramp. I mean, it's really flooded in LaGuardia," said Metro Airport spokesperson Mike Conway. "The other big problem they have in New York is how do you get employees to work with the transit system shut down."
Conway said airports in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia are starting to reopen.
