FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -- Red Hots, Black Cows, Slo Pokes, Chick-O-Sticks, Pixy Stix, Necco wafers -- the Woodward Avenue Candy Shop is stocked with all of your childhood favorites.
"We're custom. You can come in and make your own bag, and we specialize in candies from the 1930s on up," said Janie Dejaeghere.
She is the Willie Wonka-esqe impresario and proprietor of the sugar-buzzed emporium. $10 a pound for candy in bulk including fresh delectables peaking out from her 100-year-old candy counters.
What is the appeal of so-called "retro candy"?
"I just think that it kind of brings people alive again. They remember when they were a kid and they used to walk up to the corner store and they'd get a bag full of candy, and it just brings back their childhood," Dejaeghere said.
A lot of favorites can be had for as little as a quarter.
"You can also purchase candy wholesale by the three pound bag, five pound bag, you get a great discount," Dejaeghere explained.
She does cake pops and gift baskets and variety kits, even a skull made entirely on gummy bear-like goodness and bacon soda.
The Woodward Avenue Candy Shop is open 12 to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays.
