A volunteer in Old Howard Beach, Queens, says her group's efforts to provide coffee and clothing to their neighbors who lost everything in superstorm Sandy are being met with resistance from a local church.
Maria Ingarda says everyone has gone above and beyond to help those in need, but she can't understand why a school gymnasium-- which she says is empty-- won't let them set up a distribution site inside.
"The challenge that we're having now is that we've totally outgrown (our) space. We've been on the streets driving around with coffee and food. We've heard the words 'separation of church and state. We don't know why we just keep hearing no," said Ingarda.
