We were in a high-rise building on Sea Girt Avenue in the Rockaways where power has been out since Sandy. A lot of elderly people live there.
Without power, people say they are scared and feeling cast off.
We met Myweshia and Candace Ellison on the first floor of the high-rise. They'd just filled a suitcase with bottles of water to flush their toilets. We followed them up the steps carrying the supplies and found one of those seniors they're concerned about.
"These old people should have power first," Ellison says.
An elderly man, named Ira, seemed confused as he searched for water.
The Ellisons convinced him to take two of their bottles of water.
We climbed further to a darkened corridor of the 9th floor where Lola Ramgeetis caring for an elderly woman in a wheelchair.
"No power, no water, no lights, freezing to death," Ramgeetis says outside of her door, with an American flag sticker on it.
Next door, Greg Hudson says emergency crews have been checking on residents.
Hudson said the National Guard came Friday and passed out food and checked on residents' medical needs.
"I've heard a couple of people have passed in this building because of no heat, no food," Hudson says.
He says they have heard several promises that the power will be back on soon, but they aren't believing promises anymore.
Hudson has been trying to heat his apartment by turning on the gas stove. He says it's the only thing he can do to try to protect the health of his 80-year-old mother.
