Coast Guard containing leaked oil from grounded tanker

Posted: Updated:

A 770-ton tanker ship called the John B. Caddell washed ashore onto Front Street in Staten Island when Superstorm Sandy hit.

For years the ship was tied to a pier about a quarter mile away. It broke free from its lines and washed ashore during the storm.

The Coast Guard gave Fox 5 News an exclusive look on board the ship as crews worked to get rid of some of the oil that leaked during the storm.

Another team is working to contain any oil that may have leaked into the water.

On land welders are patching up any holes that might allow water to get in.

Eventually the tanker will be towed to another location where it will be broken up.

Officials say they expect the ship to be on land for about two more weeks, making Front Street quite a tourist attraction.
