Veterans from all over the country are coming together to help victims of Hurricane Sandy in the Rockaways. In honor of Veterans Day, nearly a thousand military veterans came to the peninsula to assist with disaster relief.
This disaster response organization mission is to provide the rehabilitation of homes along the coastline of the Rockaways.
Veteran volunteers have aided in the debris clearing and mucking of homes, streets and a local temple on Sunday and Monday. One veteran from the Bronx said it gives veterans a chance to serve again and to feel useful.
Future officers from the Merchant Marine Academy used their day off to help this community. They marched the streets with shovels and buckets in an effort to clean this devastated neighborhood.
