Dispute grows over Detroit schools, state control

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- A dispute is escalating over a statewide educational system for schools with the lowest academic performance that started in Detroit.

The Detroit Board of Education voted Tuesday night to withdraw from the Education Achievement Authority.

The action comes after Michigan voters' repeal last week of the state's emergency manager law.

State-appointed emergency financial manager Roy Roberts is in place for the Detroit Public Schools district. His office says the agreement for the statewide system remains.

The system got its start this year, taking control of 15 Detroit schools. The Detroit board, however, wants control of those schools back in the Detroit district.

Meanwhile, a hearing is Wednesday in a state lawsuit seeking to remove the majority of the Detroit school board.
